Blog #5

Transcendentalism has always been a little hard to understand to me. Living deliberately would be extremely difficult. What I get out of it is that all the boring things in life would suddenly be important to me. Also getting back to nature and not using any "modern" technology, which for Thoreau was like trains, telegraphs, etc. What I never get is why? Why go back to nature. We create technology to make life easier if we give up technology then why is it created in the first place. Over Fall break I'm going to be doing the extra credit assignment where I give up technology for a week. Will it be life changing? Hard to believe but you never know. It will be challenging, but maybe it will give me a larger understanding of the concept of Transcendentalism.

  1. I agree that we created technology to make life easier but by giving it up, maybe we will be able to learn to appreciate the things that are natural in our world. I'm not saying that people don't appreciate nature but without technology we might get to know nature better...if that makes sense.

  2. I, like chelsea, agree that technology was designed to make life easier, but at the same time it has consumed our lives, so maybe giving it up for a week or however long will make people realize that it truly has consumed our lives. Good luck with your challenge, hopefully it will give you an experience which you will carry with you

  4. haha that was a funny post man, I like how you worded it.

I think that technology is an awesome thing and when we use its mystical powers for good, its good...but most of the time we abuse it. I think that going into seclusion for a year is extreme, but the concept is kind of cool - stepping away from it all and seeing whats really important. I'm gonna drop it too, so we'll see how it goes!
